Vintage Design
A wonderful Adolf Loos and Heinrich Kulka fireside chair for Friedrich Otto Schmidt in walnut. The fireside or chimney chair is considered one of the most important designs from the Arts and Crafts movement. Adolf Loos was one of the great pioneers of modernism in Europe, influencing generations of post-WW1 designers and architects, including the Bauhaus in Germany. The armchair has its original leather back and bowed seat studded with bronze nails. It is rare to find examples of this chair with the original leather intact, which creates a timeless aged look. The geometric incised front stretcher unites the skate square section legs with ogee tongue feet, supporting shaped plank and scrolled tongue finials. The fireside chair features in the collections at the Gallery of West Bohemia and the Vitra Design Museum. Condition consistent with age and use. Austrian, circa 1931.
