19th Century Spanish Carved Christ

This carved and painted Christ is believed to be European, from the mid 19th century, and likely of Spanish origin due to the painted effects and the fineness of the carving. The white areas are the bare wood and indicate a loss of layered lacquer, paint and gesso. The figure would have originally been attached to a cross and carried in on a staff as a Processional Cross used at the entry and exit procession during the Celebration of the Mass. It’s condition reflects it’s age, approximately 170+ years old, including missing fingers, toes and paint. It is currently mounted on a lightly padded, teal velvet base with the original metal “nails” and is protected by a custom made, museum quality acrylic case measuring 20″ x 14″ x 5.5″, with hardware installed, ready to hang. The Christ figure itself measures 15″ x 12.5″ x 2.75″.
