Striking Italian bronze chess set was modeled after Etruscan bronze sculptures produced in the Umbro-Sabellian area around the 5th century BC. The figures are fully armored and ready for battle, with the king and queen are portrayed as Neptune and Salacia. Knights are Roman Centurions. Pawns are Galeras and Horses portrayed as Sea Horses. All pieces are highly detailed and can be recognized as a specific character of the game. Half of the pieces were patinated green, possibly verdigris, and another treated with Bronze darkener. The board is hammered brass over wood, with a hand-hammered, patinated pattern to define the spaces and original green felt backing.
The largest pieces are standing 4.3″ tall, and the smallest – 1.1″ tall. The set is in good vintage condition with beautiful, age-appropriate artistic patina.
